What is a resistance sensor and what is it used for?

A resistance sensor, also called a resistance temperature sensor or RTD, is a temperature sensor that is based on the physical principle that the electrical resistance of a metal is dependent on temperature. The warmer the metal, the higher the resistance.

The best-known type is the Pt100: a platinum sensor with a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0 °C. It is considered the industry standard for precise temperature measurement and is widely used in the Austrian manufacturing industry.

Pt100 or Pt1000: What's the difference?

Pt100 and Pt1000 are platinum resistance temperature sensors. They differ in their nominal resistance at 0 °C. This has practical effects on the measurement signal, line resistance and suitability for certain applications.

Pt100 is the standard for many industrial applications in plastics processing. Pt1000 is recommended for long cable routes or high measurement resolution requirements.

Designs of resistance sensors

Resistance sensors are available in numerous designs. Which one is suitable depends on the installation situation, temperature range, media contact and connection design.

Surface resistance sensor

Attached directly to surfaces, such as cylinders, heating plates or tools. Ideal for quick assembly and retrofitting without drilling.

Bayonet resistance sensor

For defined installation dimensions on injection moulding machines and extruders. The positioning remains reproducible.

Screw-in resistance sensor

With thread for fixed installation in holes. High vibration resistance and good heat transfer through direct contact.

Sheath resistance sensor

Mineral insulated version in a metal jacket. Bendable, vibration-resistant and suitable for demanding environments.

Ground resistance sensor

For temperature measurement in plastic melts, mass channels or comparable process zones.

Air sensor

For air temperatures in ducts, ovens and drying systems. Depending on the application with protective tube or grid protection.

Resistance sensors from the manufacturer or dealer: What is the difference?

Standard sensors in standard dimensions are available via many channels. As soon as the application has special requirements, direct contact with the manufacturer is much more efficient: installation dimensions, cable length, plug, temperature range and media resistance can be clarified directly from a technical point of view.

Frequently asked questions about resistance sensors in Austria

What is the difference between resistance sensor and thermocouple?

Resistance sensors measure the temperature-dependent resistance of platinum. They are more accurate, more stable and suitable for many applications up to around 600 °C. Thermocouples are suitable for higher temperatures, but are usually less accurate.

Can I exchange Pt100 and Pt1000?

Not directly. Pt100 and Pt1000 have different resistances and cannot be exchanged without adjusting the measuring device.

Which protection class do I need for injection moulding machines?

At least IP65 is recommended for injection moulding applications. If there is splashing water or frequent cleaning, IP67 or higher should be selected.

How long does the delivery of special sensors take?

Standard dimensions are available at short notice. Custom-made products are calculated after technical clarification. Direct contact with the manufacturer means short response times are possible.

Are there resistance sensors also for food applications?

Yes. Versions with suitable materials, PTFE coating, special surface quality and easy-to-clean housings are possible for food technology.
