Manufacturer or dealer? Who really manufactures – and who just buys

Many providers act as if they manufacture. In fact, they buy, add a margin and pass on. For a buyer, the difference makes everything in an emergency: in custom-made products, technical queries, delivery times and design. The good news - you don't have to believe it, you can check it.

Anyone who manufactures can deliver what is not available off the shelf: special designs, real design, defined heating zones. If you just resell something, you're at an end as soon as it deviates from the catalogue. The following touchstones don't cost any money - just the right questions.

7Touchstones for purchasing

1The response time reveals the depth of production

The most honest quick test is the simplest. Ask a specific technical question and see what happens. A Manufacturer answers quickly and professionally because the technology is in-house. A middleman first has to check with his supplier - hence the radio silence for days, the evasion, the ghosting.

Anyone who doesn't respond to a technical query for days has already given you the answer.

2Custom-made products can only be made by those who manufacture them

Everyone supplies catalog goods. But ask for a truly special version - different dimensions, a special design, a part that doesn't exist - and the separation is there immediately. A retailer can only offer what his supplier has in his program. A manufacturer builds what your application needs.

Touchstone

"Can you make this for me in this variation?" – one of the sharpest tests of all.

3Design instead of catalog dimensions

A heating element is not simply length times power. A real manufacturer lays out: It calculates the power density on the surface, takes heat dissipation, connection position, cold ends and the geometry of the component into account - with the aim of a homogeneous temperature curve without hotspots and without cold zones. This is engineering work, not inventory removal.

The test for you: Don't ask about the price per piece first. Ask, How the element is designed for your application. A dealer responds with the catalog. A manufacturer asks questions – about the geometry, the process, the installation situation. Anyone who gets stuck here just keeps selling.

4Zone heating is the litmus test

Nowhere is the depth of production more evident than in zone heating. A cartridge heater with defined zones - different power densities along the length, so that the temperature is correct everywhere despite uneven heat dissipation. Or a heating plate for the packaging industry, whose zones are precisely tailored to the sealing seams. You don't take something like this off the shelf - it's calculated, laid out and manufactured.

Anyone who responds to the question about zone heating with a real technical query instead of a standard data sheet is doing it themselves.

5Technical information instead of passing on data sheets

A manufacturer can explain why a component is designed this way, can provide advice, suggest alternatives and go into more depth if a problem arises. A retailer passes on his supplier's data sheet and is exhausted as soon as you ask more deeply. Own, consistent technical documents with your own handwriting are a sign of genuine production - collected third-party data sheets reveal the reseller.

6Photos, work, visit

Anyone who actually produces can show their production: machinery, production steps, the factory. A retailer has product photos but no manufacturing to show. And the classic that answers everything is this Factory tour. A real manufacturer invites you. Anyone who avoids has a reason.

7You can recognize references from the conversation, not from the shop window

The opposite of what you would expect applies here: a reputable A-supplier and OEM supplier does not name its major customers on the website. Out of confidentiality, often contractually required, and out of respect for the business relationship - large customers are not advertising media. Suppliers who publicly display posters for their A customers appear weak rather than strong in this segment.

But in direct contact, among buyers, upon request, a real manufacturer can prove for whom and in which applications they manufacture. That's exactly what a pure dealer can't do - they lack established OEM relationships. Colorful logo walls are no substitute for real reputation. You can't make up references; they must be verifiable.

How you can identify the real manufacturer

Vertical integration is not an assertion, but a story that can be proven. For us this specifically means: In-house production since 1932, six locations in Europe, over 480 employees – and delivery directly from the manufacturer, without intermediaries. These are not marketing phrases, but verifiable facts.

Checklist: seven questions that expose the pure trader

Take these questions with you to the next supplier meeting.

How quickly does a technical answer to a specific technical query come – hours or days?

Can you make this part for me in a special version that is not available in the catalog?

How do you design the element for my specific application – and what information do you need from me?

Can you design and manufacture zone heating for my application?

Can you explain the design to me from a technical point of view – or will I just be handed a data sheet?

Can I see your production – photos, machinery, factory tour?

Can you provide evidence of what type of customers and applications you manufacture for?
